West Valley City Building Inspection Division
Field inspections take place Monday through Thursday. The first is at 8 AM and the last at 4:30 PM. The division says a request can usually be accommodated within 24 hours. A major project is assigned a primary and a secondary inspector for the length of construction. West Valley City lists plan review times of 3 to 5 days for a residential remodel, 10 days for a new house, and 3 to 4 weeks for commercial work. We account for them in every project schedule.

Where We Build
West Valley City and Salt Lake County
Under a mutual aid agreement, the Greater Salt Lake Municipal Services District, West Jordan, and Sandy can provide building inspections when West Valley City cannot fill a request made with three or more days' notice. Beyond West Valley City, our Salt Lake County page explains which office issues the permit for an address and lists every community we serve there.

West Valley City Remodeling and Permit Questions
Can I add a basement apartment in West Valley City?
Only if the home is a single-unit dwelling west of 4000 West, sits on a lot larger than 6,000 square feet, and is occupied as the primary residence of its owner of record. East of 4000 West, the city's code allows a detached ADU instead, on a lot of at least 11,000 square feet and under the standards listed above.
Does the Overpressure Zone apply to a new home in West Valley City?
It can, in the southwest corner of the city. West Valley City's design criteria note that its Overpressure Zone ordinance may apply to new structures there. The criteria give 801-963-3519 as the number for confirming whether it applies. The city's zoning ordinance defines overpressure as "a sudden increase in air pressure resulting from an explosion traveling at the speed of sound." We confirm whether the zone applies to your lot before a new home is designed.
What does West Valley City require for a kitchen remodel permit?
The city asks for plans that show the wall layout, any walls to be removed, and the location of every window and electrical receptacle. Its kitchen remodel requirements also call for GFCI protection and two 20-amp breakers serving all countertop space, no point along the counter's wall line more than 24 inches from a receptacle, and a 4-prong outlet for a new range.
How is power restored after an electrical service upgrade in West Valley City?
A power-to-panel inspection can be specially arranged with at least 48 hours' notice. For an existing home, the city coordinates its inspection with Rocky Mountain Power to keep the outage short. Once an inspector approves the work, the city contacts Rocky Mountain Power and authorizes power to the installation.
What is West Valley City's Contractor Verification Form?
It lists the general, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical contractors under the names on their state licenses, with each one's license number and signature. The city requires it before clearing power or issuing a certificate of occupancy. A form that is not completed correctly is returned.
Does a new home in West Valley City need a landscape agreement?
Yes, at the final inspection. The agreement names who is responsible for installing the landscaping, which the city requires within one year of occupancy.
