ADU Rules in Draper

Draper's ADU permit page lists conditions that include these, most for every unit and one for internal units only.

  • An ADU permit for every single-family home with an accessory dwelling unit
  • Only one ADU per property
  • For an internal ADU, a residentially zoned lot larger than 6,000 square feet that fronts a public street meeting the city's minimum width, outside the areas on the City Council's map where internal ADUs are prohibited
  • A valid ADU permit before the unit is rented or offered for rent, and rentals of at least 30 consecutive days
  • An owner-occupied primary dwelling and at least one extra on-site parking space that is not tandem
  • No separate utility meters for the ADU

Utah's ADU statutes apply in Draper as well, as our ADU page explains.

What Homeowners Ask

Draper Remodeling and Permit Questions

Can I add a basement apartment in Draper?

Yes, in a single-family home that is your primary residence, on a residentially zoned lot larger than 6,000 square feet that fronts a public street meeting the city's minimum width. The lot must also sit outside the areas where the City Council's map shows internal ADUs as prohibited. The property can hold no other ADU. Draper requires an ADU permit for every home with an accessory dwelling unit.

Do I need a geotechnical report to build a new home in Draper?

Yes. Draper takes plans for a new home only after the city has accepted a geotechnical engineering report for the parcel. We schedule the report early in preconstruction.

Which office issues building permits in Draper?

The Draper Building Division issues them through the online services portal. The division's number is 801-576-6399.
